The premise of this story is a young Amish woman’s
journey of the spirit when she discovers she was adopted into her family, found as an abandoned infant. Annie knows she must find “the path that has her heart”. Annie asks her family to trust and honor her search to find where she belongs, knowing this could mean ex-communicating her from her own family. Annie also leaves John, the young man who is courting her. He understands Annie’s need to find her place and discover who she is. He reluctantly lets her go with the hope she will return.

After one dead end and countless others, to find her biological family, Annie longs for her old life. The modern conveniences of the English create a fast pace she soon wishes would slow down. Secular relationships that start and end quickly make her want for the slow courtship she had with John. She wishes she could just be of one body, living together with the same faith. She misses the Ordnung, or code of conduct of the Amish that made her feel safe. All of the temptations she was warned of are now at her fingertips, urging her to explore them. Her quest for self keeps her from returning, but eventually she becomes so broken Annie reaches a point of no return and has to make a choice.
